I didn’t know much about my little Catherine other than the moment I found out I was pregnant with her, I loved her. She would have come right after Henry and would be 6 this December. Her heartbeat was strong at the 6-week ultrasound, but gone by 11 weeks. We were devastated. I never knew my heart could break into a thousand pieces over someone I’d never met.
Genetic testing confirmed that Baby had all the right everything she should have had to be a beautiful baby girl. For whatever reason, though, God decided we needed a little girl angel in heaven, so we named her Catherine after my middle name.
I always remember my little girl. On days when it’s really hard, I think of her cheering me on and reminding me that one day we can paint nails together in heaven.
But the more I thought about it, the more I started feel like – why wait to have experiences together?! I was told by a priest-friend recently that Catherine is still my daughter, even in heaven, so she has to follow the 4th Commandment of……..what is it my good bible-loving friends??? Ding, ding, ding! Honor Your Father and Mother.
So I said, pull up your bootstraps, Baby Girl! Mommy and you are going to start a company together! Your job is to keep bugging Jesus for me that if He’s leading your mom in this direction, then He better deliver on the work, the inspiration, and the stories to tell. And Mommy’s job is to just keep praying, listening, and finding unique ways to honor His mission in my life.
And here we are today! New company started by mom and daughter.
This might be a strange story or concept for some to grasp, and that’s okay. We are a strange pair! But little by little, I see more and more confirmations that this is the direction I am definitely meant to be heading. It might last a year. I hope it lasts a lifetime! However long it is meant to be around, though, my desire is that this little mother/daughter company of Mary Catherine Marketing spreads goodness and hope. May it live up to the namesake of my sweet angel in heaven…and all the amazing women who I am proud to honor with my name of Mary Catherine Elizabeth (Widhelm) Sweeney.
